Market Orientation in Fisheries Management.

All established fisheries management systems waste market oriented value adding and resource rent.  An improved more market oriented management model is introduced, where objectives for sustainability, cost-efficiency, social allocation and market-orientation may be maintained. This model combines a Seasonal Quota Auction (SQA), a license system and a system of governmental quota allocation.

Value Adding in the First Hand Sales of Fish.  Experience from Iceland, Norway and Scotland

Fish auction markets yield considerable higher ex-vessel prices in Iceland than traditional contract sales. The Icelandic rural auction markets are very competitive with auction markets in urban areas on the continent of Europe and in UK.

What influence do exchange methods have on ex-vessel prices and what are the potential implications for the regional management of the fisheries? This paper undertakes an empirical analysis of exchange methods and ex-vessel prices for specific demersal fish controlled for fish size and quantity in four North Atlantic regions, including Iceland, North-Norway and Scotland. Market oriented fish production

July 1998

Atlantic Bluefin Tuna (Thunnus thynnus).

Catch report from trial fishery carried out by Japanese longliners in 1998 in the Mid North Atlantic.

A report analysis the catch results, compared with the historic trend of catch reduction in the Norwegian Economic Zone.  The largest giant tuna, in term of, weight were caught in the Norwegian Zone (1-5°E) and west of 35°W.  The biggest total catches, which consisting of smaller sized tuna, were taken in the Mid Atlantic 13-20° W.  It was not measured any significantly differences in tuna length between the Norwegian EEZ and international waters west of 13° W. The analysis shows that catch success is related to catching area, sea temperature, number of hooks and distance between hooks.  The analytical models explain only 21% of the catch variations of bluefin tuna in the East Atlantic and 13% in the Mid Atlantic. This means that catch variations are related to such factors, as skipper effect and good fortune, not included in the model.  It appears that fishing on stocks characterized by low density and availability as in the bluefin tuna case, are more dependent on chance than fishing of fish stocks with high availability. The trial fishery’s low catches in the Norwegian Economic Zone are consistent with the long-term trend whereas the stock of giant mature bluefin tuna is reduced. This implies that Norway has economic interests in building up the standing stock of mature giant bluefin tuna. (Read more here).

ATLANTIC BLUE WHITING. NEW RESOURCE FOR SURIMI PRODUCTION

Several years of research and full-scale production experience have shown that North Atlantic blue whiting is an excellent raw material for a profitable at sea surimi production. At present this fish is primarily caught for fishmeal production.  Great opportunities. (Read more here)
